If there's a spot in Rochester where you would feel comfortable walking up to the bar and, in your best British accent, ordering a martini shaken, not stirred, it's Khaos Martini Bar and Lounge — even if you're not James Bond.
The place: Located on Alexander Street in the spot that used to house The Secret, Khaos held its grand opening Nov. 11. The place seems to take its cues from other bars in East and Alexander area; Khaos has the relaxing lounge vibe of a pub like The Old Toad, but also the pulsating music and dance floor of a nightclub like One.
There are two floors — each with a bar — and five televisions (including a big screen projector). The first floor has three semi-secluded VIP areas, which are available free of charge and outfitted with large sofas.
The look: The first level has red floors and red-cushioned chairs. Red and white curtains set off the VIP areas, which also feature candleholders styled like martini glasses. The second level has a different look. Black is the dominant color leading up the stairs and at the landing, which overlooks the dance floor and provides a good view of the big screen TV above the dance floor.
The crowd: It doesn't veer toward one specific demographic — at least it didn't the first Saturday it was open, when I stopped by. I passed a couple ladies on my way downstairs who were singing loudly to a Ke$ha tune and also encountered people in jeans and caps, relaxing with martinis at the bar.
The martinis: They are the highlight at Khaos. "We'll make them any way you want," says owner Ron Stebbins, adding that Khaos stocks more than 20 varieties of vodkas (not quite as many of gin) and that most martinis are $5.
Good to know What: Like the name says, it's a martini bar and lounge. Where: 289 Alexander St. When: 8 p.m. until 2 a.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
