Monty’s Korner may be one of many bars clustered around the East Avenue/Alexander Street area, but it has a unique, British vibe, thanks in large part to its laid-back atmosphere and tendency to tune in to European, rather than American, football.
“We’re probably one of the more quiet bars in the area,” says bar manager Katy Daniels, 33, who also happens to be a U.K. native. “We’ve got a great crowd that comes in, a lot of regulars.”
The place
Monty’s Korner started as a strictly beer-and-wine bar, but as the clientele expanded, so did the liquor selection. The music varies a lot, too. Daniels says it depends on which bartender is working, but the pub plays everything from British pop to The Grateful Dead.
And now for something completely different
The first half of the bar’s name references the popular British comedy troupe, Monty Python.
Team players
“We show the World Cup and Euro Cup (soccer matches) when they’re on,” Daniels says. “We used to show soccer on Saturday mornings, but we had to stop doing that because it was 10 in the morning and only a few people showed up.” She says rugby is a popular sport among patrons, too, and the bar sponsors the Rochester Renegades Women’s Rugby club.
Yes, they're related
Monty’s Korner and Monty’s Krown, at 875 Monroe Ave., are owned by the same people, and both establishments serve Monty’s Fathead IPA — a dark amber IPA with three American hop varieties — made by Custom BrewCrafters in Honeoye Falls.
