Long before I was born, the Wintonaire was a swinging hot spot. Now, nearly three decades after its closing, Dickie Flynn has reopened the North Winton neighborhood landmark.
The place: It has an intimate restaurant feel, with a long wooden bar — from the old Wintonaire, which opened in 1942 — and a dining area with about 10 tables. Flynn refurbished everything from floor to ceiling, adding flat-screen plasma TVs above the bar, perfect for watching the NFL, the NHL or UFC fights.
The food: The lunch menu, serving staples like sandwiches, salads and burgers, is available from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon until 10 p.m. Sundays. A menu of dinner entrees (chicken Parmesan, homemade meatloaf, broiled scallops) is served from 4 until 9 p.m. during the week and on Sundays and until 10 p.m. on Saturdays. A late-night menu, featuring faves like 'dillas and wings, is available from 10 p.m. until 1 a.m. daily.
The drink specials: Right now, the Wintonaire has two: $5 Absolut Bloody Marys from noon until 2 p.m. Sundays and Genny specials — including $3 Dundee Oktoberfest brews — Sundays and Mondays during football. But it plans to introduce more specials and a happy hour.
Lots of lots: There are four parking lots available to Wintonaire patrons: the main lot to the left of the building, the Catholic church lot at the corner of Winton Road and Browncroft Boulevard, the Bay Goodman Pizza lot to the right of the Wintonaire — but only after 10 p.m. — and the lot behind the main Wintonaire lot after 5 p.m.
"We wanted to work with the community, the way the old Wintonaire did," Flynn says. In return for use of the lots, Flynn has agreed to help with snow removal in the winter.
