Ken Da Costa Fernandes has raised enough money for the American Cancer Society to be considered a national pacesetter. Kim McMahon, senior director of communications and marketing for the American Cancer Society in Rochester, says Da Costa Fernandes was one of 465 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer participants from around the country who last year raised more than $2,500.
"He's hit nationwide status, and that makes us proud," she says. Da Costa Fernandes is the creator of the Rochester Breast Cancer FallCrawl, a pub crawl in downtown Rochester with a charitable twist. He began the event to honor his mother, Belivia Da Costa Fernandes, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 (she's currently in remission).
The 4th annual event takes place at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, and raises money for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk (Sunday, Oct. 4, at Frontier Field) and breast cancer research in Rochester.
"I think, unfortunately, so many people have been affected by breast cancer," he says. "Everyone has a common tie to it." The first FallCrawl in 2006 drew around 800 people and raised $10,500. Last year, the event drew 2,000 people and raised more than $20,000. Da Costa Fernandes hopes that this year's event will raise $25,000. Next year he plans to add a 5K race before the event.
For the first time in the FallCrawl's four-year history, a stage will be set up on Lawrence Street to host a number of bands, including opening act Zero Gravity (whose set begins at 6:30 p.m.), Something Else and Remedy, which played its first gig at the inaugural FallCrawl and has played there every year since, despite the fact that two out of the three band members no longer live in Rochester.
Fairport native and singer/guitarist Ian Campbell moved to San Diego more than a year ago and is traveling to Rochester to perform with the band for the event. "Anything I can do to help out the cause is for the best," he says.
Wristbands are available in advance for $10 at The Pig, 7 Lawrence St.; Temple Bar and Grill, 109 East Ave.; Hot Shots Indoor Beach Volleyball, 1046 University Ave.; and The Men's Room Barber Lounge and Spa, 2320 Monroe Ave., Brighton. Wristbands also are available the day of the event for $15 at any of the participating bars.
A wristband will get you drink specials at each of the bars and, of course, the fuzzy feeling of knowing your money is going toward a good cause.
