The artwork stretched across a wall upstairs at East Avenue's Spot Coffee was created by someone who's usually close by. Coffee shop manager Michael Lloyd, 21, of Rochester has been painting since he was about 8 years old.
"I broke my wrists as a child and was tied up with casts on both arms for the better half of a year," he says. "This was when I first held a paintbrush. I began painting portraits of myself, of the people around me and eventually of strangers."
More than 300 of Lloyd's paintings will be on display at Spot in a showcase titled, "Talking Strangers" until Sept. 15. As for now, Lloyd says he's been working with watercolors and India ink. Until his art career takes off, he will continue to work at Spot, where he also is art and music director.
What are you listening to now? A variation of several different items, nothing exclusive; I feel a need for a variety. I have been listening to "Gagging Order," by Radiohead, recently.
