More than 100 Rochester-area festivals to keep you busy this season

Rochester Festival Guide 2010

We’ll throw a summer festival to celebrate just about anything — beer, food, flowers, music, film, arts and crafts or greased-pole climbing (see: Lumberjack Festival).

How else could we come up with something called the Ten Ugly Men Festival, a benefit featuring food, music, kickball, volleyball, and a huge Slip ‘n’ Slide, at Genesee Valley Park?

So go ahead, pick your month and check out some of the big events planned for summer.

Campus-wide event that showcases the innovative and creative spirit of Rochester Institute of Technology students, faculty and staff, where visitors can experience interactive presentations, hands-on demonstrations, exhibitions and research projects set up throughout the campus. Activities include carnival rides, inflatables, games and multiple performance stages with live music and entertainment.

The Shuttle service will operate out of Lot Q on the south side of campus; and Marketplace Mall, Hylan Drive and West Henrietta Road, Henrietta. Shuttles will be located at the former Cinema lot adjacent to DSW. Shuttle service will be provided between off-site parking areas and the race site before the race from 4:15 to 6:30 p.m. and from 8:15 to 10 p.m.

The Maplewood Rose Celebration comes into full bloom this weekend at the Maplewood Rose Garden, Lake and Driving Park avenues. Although the roses will command center stage the festival offers other fun activities including crafts, garden displays and gardening workshops. There’ll also be tours of the rose gardens and the gorge, food vendors, children’s activities and live entertainment. Events run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Highlights include Gorge Explorer hikes, 9 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday; children’s inflatables (a fundraiser for the Maplewood YMCA), 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday; Wine and Jazz in the Garden, noon to 4 p.m. Saturday; and the Father’s Day Picnic in the Park, 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. The weekend kicks-off on Friday with the Party on the Bridge , a block party featuring live entertainment, food and fireworks. It runs from 7 to 10 p.m. Admission is free. The inaugural Nazareth College Dance Festival opens Saturday with a New Orleans-style street parade along ARTWalk led by Cleveland-based Inlet Dance Theatre. It starts at 11:30 a.m. Inlet on Sunday will again give strolling performances, this time at 1 p.m. along Schoen Place in Pittsford. Inlet will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at Nazareth College Arts Center. Tickets for the concert are $20 to $30. On Sunday and Monday, the dance festival also will host free dance concerts on the lawn at Nazareth featuring several local dance groups including Bharata Classical Indian Dance, Borinquen Dance Theatre, Bill Evans Dance Co. and Bush Mango Drum & Dance. The festival continues with debates on the theme, “What is Dance?” and performances throughout next week. Here’s a quick look at the lineup: · It’s Club Night in the St. Paul Quarter with headliner Howard Hewett on Thursday at the Water Street Music Hall, 204 N.
