Strongest 'Voice'? NBC's The Voice won the battle of the fall singing contests over Fox's retooled X Factor. The Voice averaged 12.3 million viewers for Monday's premiere (and 11.7 million over four hours last week), while The X Factor drew 8.7 million for Wednesday's opener, which overlapped with a hastily added Voice episode. But both shows fell from their previous starts.
Early tryouts: NBC, in need of repair, was most aggressive about sneak peeks of new shows: Among them, Matthew Perry's Go On continues to shine brightest (9.7 million viewers Tuesday ), ahead of The New Normal (about 7 million Monday and Tuesday) and Guys With Kids (6.3 million Wednesday).
Here and gone: FX's Sons of Anarchy returned for a fifth season with 5.4 million viewers Tuesday, a new high that was up 10% from last fall's then-record start. HBO's Boardwalk Empire returned Sunday with 2.9 million, matching last fall's opener, while the series finale of Weeds, Showtime's longest-running series, smoked out a season-high 864,000.
