If you're wondering what to do with your dusty, old, out-of-use cell phone, consider cashing it in for discounted music downloads and concert giveaways.
This month, Water Street Music Hall is joining forces with Rock The Earth — a national group that promotes environmental awareness through music-industry partnerships — to collect and recycle old cell phones (including cords and chargers).
"We like the cell phone campaign because it's simple for us to do," says Catherine Bauer, who works at Water Street as a talent booker and promoter, and "we do have a lot of people coming through our doors."
In exchange for any model of old phone, a donor will receive a 20 percent off a purchase from Musictoday.com, a Web site that offers music downloads, concert tickets and more.
Each donated phone also guarantees its owner entry into one of Water Street's ongoing drawings for DVDs, CDs, T-shirts and signed artist memorabilia.
In what Bauer called Water Street's "lucky day," a $1,000 guitar was donated to the cause by Gibson and will be given away at the Jonny Lang show Tuesday, Sept. 22.
Cell phone donors who provide their names, cell phone numbers and e-mail addresses also will be entered into the ultimate Rock the Earth prize drawing — the "Party Like a Rockstar" package, which includes a Gibson guitar and use of a tour bus for a day.
Bauer says Water Street will participate in the program until the end of December and hopes to collect 5,000 phones toward Rock The Earth's goal of 1 billion phones.
