You can make a day of it, or a week for that matter, by gaining information from the wine trail organizers and driving around the lakes. Or take one of the many limousine services that offer specialized tours of the region. If you want to do more than tour wineries, the region offers museums, concerts, craft fairs and antique shops.
The New York Wine & Culinary Center in Canandaigua opened in June 2006 as a gateway to the region, which now has more than 85 wineries — or more than 100 if you count vineyard operations that don't have public tasting rooms. New York state — with the Finger Lakes region making up the largest portion — is third behind California and Washington state in winery sales at $420 million, according to MKF Research.
