My friend Linda has lived in the Browncroft area for a couple of years and has always wanted to try Sandwich Works Café in Browncroft Plaza. Now that her house is on the market and she's moving out of the neighborhood, we stopped in for a post-workout meal.
The mood
I wouldn't go here for the ambience, but it was a perfectly fine place to grab a bite — as long as you don't come with a crowd. A handful of tables fill the nondescript, small and narrow dining area. Five stools line the counter where a steady take-out business handles orders, so you might want to perch yourself on one outside the lunch rush.
The food
Our sandwiches were good, but I have to start by talking about the homemade potato chips, which came with both meals and were easily the best I've ever had. Thick, crispy and ridged, their odd shapes and often gargantuan proportions made each chip even more endearing. I took some home, and even refrigerated and stale, they were delicious. (My 3-year-old daughter and I argued over who was going to get the last one.)
Linda and I split a cup of steaming hot Crab Bisque ($3.29) — nice and heavy on the imitation crabmeat and sherry — as an appetizer. Then I downed the Mushroom, Artichoke and Roasted Pepper Panini with Pepper-Ranch Dressing ($6.49) . The chunky ingredients were served on mildly herbed flatbread. The pepper-ranch dressing was mild, as was the salsa on Linda's warm and fresh Vegetarian Wrap ($6.29), which came with a decent mixture of grilled portobello mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes, onions, lettuce and sour cream.
Create-your-own-sandwiches start at $4.99 and include meat, cheese, toppings and dressings, and are served with chips and a pickle. Soups, salads (half or whole portions), wraps, sandwiches and burgers are also available, with seafood on Fridays.
The drinks
The selection is limited. Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Sierra Mist and Lipton teas are $1.30 to $1.79; bottled water is $1.50.
The damage: $20.86
Next time ... Egg and Olive Sandwich ($4.79), served with lettuce, tomato and mayo on French bread. Never had one. Linda says it's one of her favorite sandwiches — she makes it at home — so I guess I could give it a shot.
