When life throws you a busy schedule or a lazy day, takeout might be on the menu. Beyond the usual fast fare, though, Rochester offers some great spots where you can get almost anything on the go.
NATHAN'S SOUP AND SALAD
Where: 691 Park Ave.
Contact: 461-3016 or www.nathanssoupandsalad.com
Description: You don't go to Nathan's for the ambience. You go there for incredible soups and sandwiches, like Nathan's Creamed Chicken and Biscuit Soup ($2.10 for a cup) and Stuffed Croissant Sandwich filled with Chicken Salad ($4.95). On any given day, Nathan's serves fresh breads, sandwiches, salads and at least a half-dozen soups, including chilled-fruit and chocolate dessert soups. Best to keep this option open for lunch, though. Nathan's is open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
MISE EN PLACE
Where: 83 South Ave.
Contact: 325-4160 or www.miseenplacemarket.com
Description: Part corner store, part dine-in/dine-out bistro, Mise en Place offers everything from pasta and burgers to steak and scallops to go. Plus, you can shop for fresh produce, pantry supplies, organic coffees and more while you wait for your order. Try the Chicken French, which is well worth the $12.99 price and large enough to share. Open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, this South Wedge favorite is perfect for lunch or dinner.
MAX MARKET
Where: 2949 Monroe Ave., Pittsford
Contact: 271-1210 or www.maxmarketmonroe.net
Description: Everything looks so good at Max Market, it's almost a shame to eat it. Freshly made foods like Beef Tenderloin and Blue Cheese Tartlette ($7.95) are positively mouth-watering. While you wait for your order, shop the market's selection of gourmet foods, including olive oils and cheeses. Max Market also offers boxed dinner specials like carved, oven-roasted turkey with two sides for $8.99 Monday through Friday and free cheese and food samplings from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Max Market is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
EL DORADO
Where: 2513 East Henrietta Road, Henrietta
Contact: 486-4170
Description: If authentic Mexican is what you're craving, El Dorado may be just the thing. Every menu item is less than $10, and you can fill up on flautas — corn tortillas hand-rolled with meat or potatoes, deep fried and served with rice and beans — for $4.50. Or try Quesadilla Bravada — served with two cheeses, bacon, tomatoes, onions, cilantro and jalapeno — for $4.99. And the guacamole includes hearty chunks of onion and tomato. El Dorado is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
LOVIN' CUP
Where: 300 Park Point Drive, Henrietta
Contact: 292-9940 or www.lovincup.com
Description: With its live music, trivia nights, cozy seats and ultra-groovy crowd, Lovin' Cup is one of those places that's hard to leave. But if grub-to-go is all you have time for, check out this place seven days a week. Any one of its wrap sandwiches (especially the Wrapper's Delight for $6.29) or gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches (like the Robots Rock for $5.99) will fill you up for lunch. For dinner, try a gourmet personal pizzas (starting at $7.99). Lovin' Cup is open 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., Sunday and Monday; 10 a.m. to midnight, Tuesday and Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 2 a.m., Thursday and Friday; 9 a.m. to 2 a.m., Saturday.
SIAM FINE THAI CUISINE
Where: 280 Exchange Blvd.
Contact: 232-7426 or www.thesiamrestaurant.com
Description: The décor is beautiful at this Thai restaurant, but the food is the star of the show. Appetizers include Fresh Veggie Spring Rolls ($3.25 and, in my opinion, quite possibly the best-tasting in town). Siam's surprising signature dish, Mango Tango, features fresh basil with vegetables in a mango sauce and is $10.95 (a lunch version is available with veggies for $8.95 or seafood is $11.95; a dinner option with meat is $13.95).
Try the Sankaya (sweet rice custard, $3.50) for a sweet ending. Siam is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday; and 1 p.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday.
SAKURA HOME RESTAURANT
Where: 2775 Monroe Ave., Pittsford
Contact: 288-8130 or www.sakurahomerestaurant.com
Description: One of Rochester's newest Japanese restaurants, Sakura Home might also be the best-in-show (it offers some über-fun hibachi, if you ever have the time to stay). The Sakura Lunch Box, served Monday through Friday is $6.99 and includes miso soup, salad, shrimp shumai (dumplings) and a California roll (add a tempura roll for $4 more). For dinner, try the sushi a la carte starting at $1.99 per roll or the Sukiyaki (clear noodles with thinly sliced beef, vegetables and tofu) for $9.99.
